To identify ( very ) old military "imagerie" ( imagery ) I use some books ( the oldest is a 1948 french book ).

For old WW1 paper soldiers and for military medical service I mostly use these three books:

"La Sanidad Militar" ( The military health services ), a spanish book by Rafael De Fancisco Lopez

"La Storia per Immagini - La Grande Guerra 1914-1918 ( History through images - The Great War 1914-1918 ), an italian book by Alfio Moratti.

"Verdun et la Grande Guerre par les images d'Epinal" ( Verdun and the Great War by the images of Epinal ), a french book only about the "Imagerie d'Epinal".

In Europe ( Western Europe ) only Italy and Spain have historical archives ( museums and foundations ) for old popular military images. Something there is also in France ( D'Epinal Museum, at Epinal, and a museum about the little soldiers of Strasbourg ... ) but they cover only specific productions.

OT: I have pdf files for Edward Ryan's "Paper Soldiers: The Illustrated History of Printed Paper Armies from the 18th, 19th & 20th Centuries" ( in english language, about worldwide production - 9 files, about 580 MB ) and "Le armate di carta. Cento anni di soldatini italiani" by Alfio Moratti ( in italian langiage, only about italian productions. One file, about 250 Mb ). I don't know how to upload them in forum's Library but if someone needs them in some way I share.

Another French minor publisher of the first quarter of the twentieth century ( during the wartime ). "Imagerie de Paris"  ( publisher G. Gerardin ).

Editions H. BOUQUET - Paris ( "Pro Patria" and "Pro Familia" series ). Same publication period of the previous sheets.
